MTSU Tennis Teams, MTA, fans and area players teamed up to raise $1800 to support the American Red Cross'  Haitian relief effort.

Both Middle Tennessee Blue Raider tennis teams hosted a clinic Saturday morning, 1-23-10, at the Old Fort Tennis Center to raise money for the victims of the recent Haitian earthquakes.

Nearly 85 people of all ages attended the clinic. In lieu of a cost for the clinic, which was co-sponsored by the Murfreesboro Tennis Association, donations were asked for the American Red Cross. The clinic raised $1,800 for the American Red Cross in support of its efforts in Haiti.

Thanks to all who joined in . See Picture.

Grand Opening planned for new tennis courts at Old Fort Park.

Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation Department (MPRD) is pleased to announce the Grand Opening of the new tennis complex at Old Fort Park on Tuesday, November 10, 2009.  The new tennis complex consists of 16 total courts, including 8 lighted courts and 2 championship courts with additional seating.

The tennis complex was the result of a tri-party agreement between the Rutherford County School Board, Rutherford County Government and the City of Murfreesboro to offset the need for courts at the county schools and increased public need.  It proved to be more economically feasible to build a tennis complex to be used by both the county and city versus constructing new courts at each school.

“The joint efforts of the three parties is a positive step towards the delivery of a comprehensive tennis program to the citizens of Murfreesboro and Rutherford County,” said Lanny Goodwin, Director of Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation Department.

Primary usage will be for Rutherford County Schools mid-February through mid-May, followed by MPRD for the remaining months.  MPRD in partnership with Murfreesboro Tennis Association (MTA) will offer a variety of programs, leagues, lessons, tournaments, clinics and open play for the public.  The tennis courts will be available for reservations beginning November 12 by contacting MPRD at 615-890-5333.  If the courts are not reserved or being used for scheduled programs and/or leagues, they will be available for free on a first-come, first-serve basis.

In addition, the tennis complex will be the site for hosting a portion of the TSSAA Spring Fling competition.  In the future, the City of Murfreesboro and Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce will work towards obtaining tournaments on a state and regional level.

The Grand Opening on November 10 will begin with presentations, dignitaries and the ribbon cutting from 4:00 to 4:30p.m.  Tennis demonstrations will follow from 4:30-5:30p.m.

Old Fort Park is located at 1025 Old Fort Parkway, Murfreesboro, TN 37129.  For grand opening information, please contact Angela Jackson at 615-893-2141 or email: ajackson@murfreesborotn.gov.

Dear Tennis Fans,
The City of Murfreesboro is currently considering the possibility of building an indoor tennis facility at Old Fort Park.  The committee involved with this study is asking for input from our local tennis community to determine the demand for indoor block time.

Indoor block time is court time that is typically paid for in a lump sum in advance of the winter season, generally somewhere between 5 and 6 months.  Random court time would be scheduled as available, but the prime blocks of time are typically booked for the season.

Would you be interested in paying for block time in a new Murfreesboro indoor tennis facility?

Assuming the cost would be the same as at Williamson County's indoor facility, which is $16 per hour, your cost for the season would be between $104 and $138.66, based on a weekly court for 6 months shared between 6 people (4 players and 2 subs each week).  The lower cost would be for a 1-1/2 hour block of time, and the higher cost would be for a 2 hour block each week.  This is only an assumption, and costs may or may not include the option of a yearly membership.

Please respond to this email by noon on Friday, October 30th if you think you would want to book block time at a new facility.  If there is more than one player at this email address that would be interested, please indicate the number of players.

Thanks for your support!
Murfreesboro Tennis Association

President

City Closed loses to Mother Nature!! Reschedule information below and on City Tourney page.

New Dates Wednesday, September 30 through Sunday, October 4.

Understanding that some current participants will be unable to play on these dates, and that others currently not in the tournament will now be available to participate, the following procedures will be in affect:
  1. Anyone entered in the tournament right now will be automatically entered in the tournament beginning September 30th.
  2. If you are currently entered in the tournament but cannot play on the revised dates please call Bill Neal at 504-6558 or Sandy Neal at 364-0823.  If you can't play I need to hear from you this week!
  3. New entries will be accepted from Monday, September 21 through Saturday, September 26.  Entry forms may be downloaded at CityTourney.htm These entry forms must be delivered to 2136 Lovelace Lane 37130 by the end of Saturday, September 26th.  Spread the word!
  4. Entries for Jr. Doubles will also close on Saturday, September 26!   No Jr. doubles signup on the first day of play.  This is a change.  Spread the word.
  5. Any division bracket substantially affected by withdrawals, new entries, or changes in seeding will be redrawn.  I expect that means most brackets will be redrawn.
  6. Jr. divisions will not be scheduled to play on Friday, October 2nd.
  7. Call Bill Neal at 504-6558 or Sandy Neal at 364-0823 with questions, concerns, or possible scheduling problems.
  8. Keep up with tournament developments at www.twitter.com/borocityclosedwww.murfreesborotennis.com/ , and by watching for our emails.
It appears this unusual weather pattern for September is to continue through this week and the coming weekend. After considering many options and much deliberation it has been decided that our best chance to run a smooth and enjoyable tournament is to begin on the revised dates above.  It is understood that this will make it difficult for some participants to continue while others may have a new opportunity to play.  We certainly apologize to those adversely affected by these circumstances.

Sandy and I want to thank everyone for your patience and understanding during the rainouts and rescheduling of last week.  We are players, too.  We know the frustration of not getting to play and constant schedule changes.  You guys were great!

MTA Junior Championships

Monday, August 17th at midnight is the deadline to enter our fourth annual MTA Junior Championships being held at MTSU the weekend of August 21st through 23rd.  Matches will start at 4:00 p.m. on Friday the 21st for ages 10 - 14.  Matches for ages 16 - 18 will begin on Saturday morning.  Any junior, 18 and under as of August 1st, with a USTA membership is eligible to enter.  This is a great opportunity for middle school and high school players to get match experience.

Players willl receive t-shirts and lunch on Saturday.  This is a USTA sanctioned tournament, so any wins will be converted to points that are used to establish each junior's rankings (state, Southern, etc.)  The format has been changed this year to a full feed-in, which means players who lose in the main draw will have more opportunities to feed in to the back draw.

You may enter online by clicking this link:  http://tennislink.usta.com/tournaments/tournamenthome/tournament.aspx?T=78426 .  If you have questions, or if you need to know how to join the USTA, just reply to this email (Laurie Edwards at lj1@comcast.net).

USTA 3.0 Mens Team Players Needed !!

The deadline has been extended for forming 3.0 level men's teams for USTA play.  Currently we have 11 men signed up to play and we need 18 to make two teams.  Nashville has not yet fielded any 3.0 tennis teams for this spring. If we can field two, all of the play would be in Murfreesboro and one of the teams would qualify to go to state. There would be five matches, and they would all be played locally (unless Nashville comes up with a team).

If you are a 3.0 man not on a team yet, please consider joining these men so they can have teams.  If you're not sure of your level, we can help you determine it.  Email Julie Wishing at ajwishing@comcast.net, or call her at 896-1370 or 293-6543  by this Wednesday morning at 8 a. m.  Players must join or be a member of the USTA, and must be at least 19 years of age in this calendar year.  Match play consists of both singles and doubles within a team.

4.0 Senior men  (50 or over during 2009)

The Murfreesboro Tennis Association is excited to announce that we have received grants from the Southern Tennis Association and the Tennessee Tennis Association for 2009 totaling almost $2,000.  As a registered community tennis association we were eligible for these grants based on the number of USTA memberships in the area for 2008.  As we decide how to best use these funds to benefit our tennis community, we will be reporting the results to you throughout 2009.

USTA teams for men and women and MTITL and MTTL teams for men are forming for Spring '09.  The information that went out earlier is copied below.  Important things to note are that Julie Wishing needs to be in contact with you if you are a team captain or if you would like to find a team, and that our men's leagues are in need of captains and a league coordinator.

USTA Men's and Women's Teams
New USTA spring teams are currently forming and registration is currently open on TennisLink.  There are possibilities to play on weekdays or weekends depending on the teams that are formed.  Players must join or be a member of the USTA, and must be at least 19 years of age in this calendar year. Teams will be formed based on skill level.  Match play consists of both singles and doubles within a team.  The team deadline is March 10th, and the season begins on March 18th.  Team division winners will go on to the state championships. Teams that played last spring may be reorganized due to players that had NTRP ratings changes.  If you are interested in playing this season, contact Julie Wishing at ajwishing@comcast.net, or call her at 896-1370 or 293-6543  with your level and she'll help you find a team.  Important:  If you are a captain of an existing team or are forming a new team in Rutherford County, regardless of where your home courts are, please contact Julie ASAP and let her know what level your team is and which courts are home for you.

MTITL and MTTL Men's Teams
MTTL is for men playing at a  4.0 level and up on Thursday nights,  and MTITL is for 3.0 to 4.0 players on Tuesday nights. There are four singles positions and four doubles per team.  Play begins around the first week of April and runs all summer. If you are interested and don't know your skill level, there are ways to determine that.  Julie Wishing is available to help you with any of your questions or help you decide which league would be a fit for you.  The MTA is in need of a man to coordinate MTITL.  If interested, please let Julie know.  Again, if you're the captain of an existing team or are forming a new team please contact Julie at the email address or phone numbers above to let her know what level you are and which courts you will call home.

Court Calendar
We now have an interactive tennis court calendar on www.murfreesborotennis.com.  It includes all courts reserved for school and MTA activities for several months.  By clicking on the individual calendar dates, you can see the specific courts reserved for that day.  These are subject to time changes and additions, so check back often when planning your tennis activities.

Update on Ladies' Player List
The MTA is compiling a contact list of lady tennis players in the area, and over 200 of you are now on the list.  This list should be very helpful to our league coordinators and team captains. The list will also be available to MTA members who join for the 2009 calendar year. Ladies of all levels (ages 19 and up), to get your name on the list, please reply to this email with your first and last name, home and cell phone numbers, and email address.  The list will only be made available to MTA members.

Membership Drive Coming Soon!
Many of you have asked about opportunities to join or renew your MTA membership for 2009, since we have always had a January/February membership drive.  This year's membership drive will be in March.  Look for news on that to come.
